The most recent recall in place involves a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to multiple car accidents and at least 13 deaths so far. The problem involves the vehicle being able to be switched out of the “run” position during operation, even while driving the vehicle. When this happens, the engine can turn completely off, rendering the electrical system, power steering, power brakes and even the deployment of airbags, inoperable.
There have been 2.6 million vehicles recalled so far because of this issue. The latest recall includes the Chevrolet Cobalt (2003-2011 models), as well as the Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac Solstice, Pontiac G5, Saturn Sky, and Saturn Ion.
General Motors and safety regulators have reportedly failed to address this issue for over 10 years. The switch defect has been associated with the deaths of over 300 people in car accidents whereby their front airbags did not deploy. Recent reports indicate that GM could have replaced or repaired the faulty switch for as little as $0.57 each.
