Drunk Driver Kills Two, Injures Seven

One witness said “total chaos” ensued when a driver under the influence of alcohol and marijuana caused a serious car crash outside two busy Louisville nightclubs.

According to police and witnesses, a 37-year-old male driver struck a parked car near O’Dolly’s and La Movida, and then zoomed into a parking lot full of people mingling outside a taco truck. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and seven others were rushed to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. Police say that during the investigation, the drivers speech was extremely slurred, he fell asleep several times, and he had a .40 BAC level. He also admitted that he had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana before driving, according to the arrest affidavit. He now faces various criminal charges.

VA To Be Mostly Immune From Federal Hiring Freeze

President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats reached a compromise that may affect disability benefits for thousands of veterans, as the Department of Veterans Affairs clarified that the administration-imposed federal hiring freeze would not affect public safety positions.

Acting Secretary Robert Snyder said this phrase is broadly defined to include nurses, doctors, counselors, and most other healthcare jobs. In the past, VA Secretary-designate David Shulkin has echoed this sentiment, calling on the agency to hire more doctors and nurses. Although the VA is still reeling from a 2014 patient wait time scandal, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer initially said that the announced freeze would affect all agencies equally. The disability benefits system is “broken,” he insisted, and “hiring more people isn’t the answer” to helping veterans “get the services that they’ve earned.”

Ky. Caregiver Faces Serious Abuse Charges

21-year-old Billy Spicer faces multiple criminal charges stemming from nursing home abuse allegations in a Clark County group home.

According to Attorney General Andy Beshear, Mr. Spicer was an overnight caregiver at a facility housing intellectually or developmentally disabled adults. At one point, Mr. Spicer either sealed a resident’s room with duct tape to keep the resident from leaving, or he failed to remove such restraint. A grand jury indicted the man on three counts, and if convicted of all three nursing home abuse charges, Mr. Spicer faces a maximum 15 years in prison. He is currently free after posing a $10,000 bond.

“One of the core missions of my office is to protect Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens from abuse and exploitation – and to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law,” Mr. Beshear vowed.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident In Hardin

A deadly pedestrian-auto collision occurred when an onrushing car struck and killed a man as he walked across Highway 68.

The wreck took place near the intersection of Aurora and Highway 68. According to witnesses, the victim’s family, and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the victim went for an afternoon walk, and as he crossed the highway, he stepped into the path of a driver on the road, who was eastbound. The driver says that although he saw the pedestrian, he was unable to stop, and the car struck the victim. Both people were rushed to a local hospital, where the pedestrian was subsequently pronounced dead.

The victim may have been wearing headphones at or near the time of the pedestrian-auto collision.

UK Company Hopes To Make Surgical Meshes Obsolete

In a press release, Mediplus says it has developed a “non-surgical alternative” for PoP treatment that avoids “the clinical risks associated with surgical mesh.”

Although they are still legal to use in the United States, surgical meshes were recalled in both Scotland and the UK, because they often cause serious side effects and are not very effective at treating Pelvic Organ Prolapse and other conditions. As opposed to a surgical intervention, Mediplus offers a range of silicone pessaries that lift internal organs to relieve incontinence and other symptoms. Support pessaries, many of which resemble small buttons or pacifiers, are usually ideal for first-time PoP victims.

An estimated 32,000 UK women use pessaries each year.

Serious Injury Two-Car Crash

A partially-parked UPS delivery truck was also involved in a head-on vehicle collision in Princeton.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Dawson Springs Road (U.S. Highway 62) and Beshears Lane just outside town. The 50 year-old male driver was eastbound on Dawson Springs, he temporarily crossed over to the westbound side to go around an idling delivery truck partially blocking the eastbound side. At that moment, another driver approached on the westbound side, and the two vehicles collided head-on. The female driver and two passengers, a 30-year-old and 69-year-old, were all rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The Link Between Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer

In the ongoing talcum powder row, many doctors are trying to walk a middle line between powerful pharmaceutical companies and innocent victims by downplaying the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer while advising women not to use the product.

As an example, Dr. Robert Ashley recently wrote that the primary study linking talc to ovarian cancer may have been tainted, but he stopped short of challenging the results. Rather than saying there was no connection, Dr. Ashley opined that the survey method may have been incomplete and the women who testified about the link may have suffered from what he called “recall bias.” Part of the problem is that ovarian cancer is so rare that reliable studies and statistics are difficult to obtain, he added.

Divorce, Child Support, And College Expenses

As the calendar inches towards spring, many Kentucky homes with high school seniors are abuzz with talk of post-secondary education. Along with the normal discussions about what school to attend, what course of study to pursue, and the number of campus bars within walking distance (parents, we all know this is a consideration), payment is usually a concern as well, especially given the skyrocketing tuition costs in Kentucky and elsewhere.

When it comes to divorced parents sharing a child’s post-secondary education expenses as child support, different states have different approaches. Just recently, Illinois changed its laws, and divorced parents must now essentially divide college costs proportionally between themselves. What is the law in Kentucky?

Are More Pro-Business Reforms Coming?

Erlanger Republican Rep. Adam Koenig is spearheading an effort to pass a comprehensive workers’ compensation reform package in the House of Representatives that he says will remove “additional burdens” on state businesses that “drive up costs” on state employers.

Although Rep. Koenig said the forthcoming plan will “really not affect workers very much,” his record suggests otherwise. The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest business lobbying groups in the state, recently gave Rep. Koenig its MVP Award not only for his pro-business voting record, but also because he often “went out of [his] way. . .to support or oppose an issue critical to the business climate in Kentucky.” Furthermore, in 2016, Rep. Koenig co-sponsored rather controversial reporting amendments to the existing workers’ compensation law.

Fire Truck Causes Serious Car Wreck

When a Lexington Fire Department vehicle made a sudden and unexpected U-turn in traffic, a trailing SUV crashed into the truck, injuring at least one person in a car wreck.

According to witnesses and authorities, the fire truck was running in emergency mode (siren on and lights flashing) near the intersection of Broadway and Judy Lane. When the crew received a dispatch call redirecting the unit to another location, the driver apparently made an unsignaled U-turn to change directions. At that moment, an SUV travelling behind the fire truck could not safely stop, and it smashed into the fire truck. The driver, whose name was not released, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The vehicle was also seriously damaged in the car wreck.
