BREAKING NEWS: Jury Awards Plaintiff $289.2 Million in Roundup Lawsuit

According to numerous news outlets, including CNN and USA Today, a jury in San Francisco awarded a man $289 million in his Roundup lawsuit. This lawsuit is the first case to go before a jury out of the hundreds of cases filed against Monsanto, the maker of the agricultural weed killer. Punishing Monsanto for Wrongdoing Dwayne Johnson, a 46-year old former school groundskeeper, has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His condition is terminal. EU Goes Against Grain And Approves Roundup

In a move that highlights the inherent difficulties in proving dangerous product cases, the European Union said it would consider extending Roundup’s license.

A newly-issued study from the European Chemical Agency apparently convinced the agency that Roundup was safe, despite a volume of evidence that glyphosate, which is the weed killer’s active ingredient, causes several forms of cancer. A spokeswoman insisted that the EU had considered “the latest state of scientific research” prior to its announcement. Environmental groups roundly criticized the move. Green Party European Parliament member said it “makes no sense to accept the wide range of risks associated with glyphosate.” The EU set no date for the start of discussions.

The retention of the European market could mean an additional $100 million a year for Roundup manufacturer Monsanto.

Lawmakers Debate Workers’ Compensation Reform

So far, it’s been a rather bumpy ride for House Bill 296, as the workers’ comp legislation is currently in a Senate committee.

Many of the proposed changes are largely technical. For example, in most cases, the bill would cut off medical benefits when the victims reach age 70 or have collected benefits for four years; the current system uses Social Security eligibility as a cutoff. Other alterations, such as the creation of a workers’ comp drug formulary, bring Kentucky’s system more in line with some neighboring states. There are some proposed procedural changes as well, including a provision that would limit the time victims have to file for reconsideration.

Rep. Adam Koenig (R-Frankfort) proposed several successful amendments, including one that increased the average weekly wage and one that extended medical benefits to permanently disabled victims.

Automaker Recalls Pickups With Bad Transmissions

Citing a manufacturing defect, Ford recalled over 52,000 Kentucky-built vehicles because they might roll uncontrollably when parked.

All affected vehicles were built between October 2015 and March 2017. Evidently, due a damaged park rod actuating plate that disengages the pin, the transmission does not go into Park even if the gear select is on P. When the pin doesn’t lock, the transmission stays in Neutral, so the vehicle may move even if it is on a flat surface. To cure the manufacturing defect, dealer mechanics will inspect and replace the park rod actuating plate.

No injuries have been reported.

Careless Driver Plus Careless Bureaucrats Equals Two Deaths

Two more people died after yet another fatal car crash on a dangerous stretch of Waymans Branch Road near Scott High School in Covington.

According to police and residents, many people use this road as a shortcut between the school and Madison Pike. The driver evidently lost control of her vehicle on the slick road; her car then skidded into a nearby creek. Both she and her grandson, 16-year-old victim, died at the scene. A third person — a high school student whose name was not released — was injured in the fatal car crash. Covington Assistant Police Chief Brian Steffen said the area is known for “frequent collisions [and] frequent crashes, especially when it starts raining.” Local resident Lisa Frieman added that “the city or county could do something to make the road safer,” such as lowering the speed limit, adding warning signs, or erecting guardrails.

The Changing Face Of Kentucky Nursing Homes

As society struggles to find innovative ways to deal with an aging population, the future of elder care may be a process as opposed to a place. However, the potential for elder abuse will be just as high.

Every day, roughly 10,000 Americans turn 65. 70 percent of these individuals will require living assistance, and a large number of these people will stay in a nursing home for at least five years. To deal with the exploding elder care issue, some advocates support a continuum of care idea. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, a continuum of care is “less a facility and more a concept” that includes hospice care, full-fledged nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation clinics, and counselling/social support services. Another new idea, the Village to Village movement, began in Boston in the early 2000s. This movemenr is dedicated to ending lonliness among older people by keeping these individuals plugged into their communities. Adult day care centers are a significant component.

Serious Injury Crash In McCracken County

Four people were hurt, and another one killed, when a driver ignored a red light, leading to a serious vehicle collision.

The wreck happened near the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 (Future City Road) and Metropolis Lake Road in West Paducah. According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, a 90-year-old Barlow resident, was distracted by the late afternoon sun’s glare and did not stop for a traffic signal. He then turned directly into the path of an oncoming car, containing the 51-year-old Lvictim, and three children. All five people were rushed to a nearby hospital with various injuries; where the victim was later pronounced dead.

Because of the extreme force of the wreck, both vehicles were almost completely destroyed.

Serious Injury Two-Car Crash

A partially-parked UPS delivery truck was also involved in a head-on vehicle collision in Princeton.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Dawson Springs Road (U.S. Highway 62) and Beshears Lane just outside town. The 50 year-old male driver was eastbound on Dawson Springs, he temporarily crossed over to the westbound side to go around an idling delivery truck partially blocking the eastbound side. At that moment, another driver approached on the westbound side, and the two vehicles collided head-on. The female driver and two passengers, a 30-year-old and 69-year-old, were all rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
