Hope For Mesolthelioma Victims

Although the cancer is still one of the deadliest diesases known to man, mesothelioma survival rates have inched up in recent years, largely because of new available treatment options. Palliative chemotherapy has increased significantly since 2016, effectively replacing radiation treatments among healthier patients. Effective surgical interventions have increased as well, though they are an option only in a limited number of cases. One study concluded that a battery of surgery to remove the cancer, light-based photodynamic therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells, and chemotherapy yielded a survival rate of nearly four years; the rate nearly doubled if the mesothelioma had not spread...

More People Pursue Hip Replacement Surgery

As the market for hip implant procedures continue to expand, the number of defective hip implant lawsuits will probably rise as well.

Collectively, Smith & Nephew, Johnson & Johnson, Stryker, and Zimmer Biomet made over $6.5 billion around the world during 2015. An aging population and an increasing obesity rate may drive global sales as high as $9.1 billion by 2024, according to current market research. Over half these sales will probably be in North America, as patients in the developing world often struggle to afford the procedure and also have a hard time finding qualified doctors to perform the surgery. Increasing per capita income may somewhat alleviate these problems.

Another Employer Fraud Scheme And Another Arrest

A Kentucky woman extradited to New York now faces serious workplace injury fraud charges, but are these kinds of cases the real problem in what many say is a broken system?

According to New York State Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott, 47-year-old Sheryl Colson, of New Concorde, began receiving her mother’s workers’ compensation checks in 2011, because the self-insured Orange-Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services did not verify the former nurse’s death. Prosecutors allege that Ms. Colson, who controlled her late mother’s estate, cashed $400 monthly checks from January 2011 to January 2013, using the funds to pay bills, eat out at restaurants, and buy “products from an Indiana company specializing in the production of hand-blown glass pipes and other smoking devices.”

VA To Be Mostly Immune From Federal Hiring Freeze

President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats reached a compromise that may affect disability benefits for thousands of veterans, as the Department of Veterans Affairs clarified that the administration-imposed federal hiring freeze would not affect public safety positions.

Acting Secretary Robert Snyder said this phrase is broadly defined to include nurses, doctors, counselors, and most other healthcare jobs. In the past, VA Secretary-designate David Shulkin has echoed this sentiment, calling on the agency to hire more doctors and nurses. Although the VA is still reeling from a 2014 patient wait time scandal, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer initially said that the announced freeze would affect all agencies equally. The disability benefits system is “broken,” he insisted, and “hiring more people isn’t the answer” to helping veterans “get the services that they’ve earned.”
